Twelve: Kelly

Holy crap, but it felt good to have a full belly. Even though they'd tried to increase their intake, it had been too hard with nothing but fruit and clams to consume. That rice had made all the difference and Kelly couldn't believe how good the peaches had tasted.

The truth was, the food had made a difference in the group as a whole. Eating together seemed to have done much to bring the two factions together. Now, everyone was talking together and it didn't seem like they were on the edge of a knockdown, drag-out fight as they had been before the food was ready.

"You think the barricade will keep them out?" Benji asked Lloyd.

"That I do. You done seen them in action. These zombies are dumb as a box of rocks and slow to boot. They don't seem very strong either. They are a danger, I'll give you that. But the people we lost, we lost because we got surprised. I think the barricade will bamboozle them long enough that we can dispatch them."

Mickey the Yorkie bounced over to Lloyd and he patted the little guy on the head before feeding him a scrap of clam. The tiny pooch made the morsel disappear quick as a wink and went off to beg at the others sitting around the fire. A well-behaved and personable little fellow, Mickey had quickly become friends with all and sundry. Even Paul smiled when the tiny dog ran up to him and sat up to beg.

"Well, more hands make less work." Benji tossed the dog another clam. "We should be able to get the camp circled in a day or two."

Kelly was glad to see the two leaders making an effort to get along. Earlier, she'd thought Deshawn might have to step in between them.

Deshawn. He hadn't come back to camp yet. She knew he'd been feeling ill, but shouldn't he have returned by now? It had to have been an hour since he headed to the beach.

"Lloyd," she blurted. "Deshawn hasn't come back. It's been too long."

"Aw, hell." Lloyd stood and cupped his hands around his mouth. "Deshawn!"

Everyone sitting around the fire got up and did the same. They called and called, but there was no sign of the tall black man.

"Should we go look for him?" Wanda asked.

"Too dark," Lloyd answered. "I hate to say it, but if we all go blundering around in the dark, whatever happened to Deshawn might go and happen to us. We'll have to let it go until morning. Then we'll try to figure out where Deshawn is."

Fast as a lightning strike, the mood of the camp plummeted. Paul went back to bed, muttering about too many employees being out sick.

"I guess we'd better figure out our sleeping arrangement." Lloyd looked the small shelter over. "No matter how you slice it, it's going to be uncomfortable until we build a bigger shelter. How about you ladies join Paul and us menfolk will rough it out here?"

"To hell with that.
